  • Arcos da Lapa - Carioca Acqueduct, Fabio (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
One of the few surviving landmarks from the colonial era, this aqueduct was finished in 1750. At one time it carried water down from the Rio Carioca, it now serves as a viaduct to the wonderful Bondinho de Santa Teresa (tram) that connects the downtown area to the Santa Teresa area. With 42 arcs and at 800-feet long, it is also known as Aqueduto da Carioca. A wonderfully stark example of the old and new architecture that defines this area.
  • Urca Hill, Fabio (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
This is the first hill up the Sugar Loaf. Aside from offering a marvelous view from the top (215 meters high), the base is also a good place to do some hiking. Most of the experienced, skilled mountain climbers will be found scaling the sheer side of the hill, but there are also nice hiking trails that start from the Praia Vermelha, which should keep you busy for more than an hour.
  • Hipódromo da Gávea, Fabio (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
Located close to the Jardim Botânico on the Gávea side of the Lagoa, this track has been used by Carioca punters since 1926. You can enjoy races four times a week all year round. A few reais will get you into the more luxurious lodge area, but it might be more fun to sit with the "average Joes". Shorts are not allowed. To get there, catch any bus labelled "via Jóquei."
  • Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, fabio (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
An unmistakable landmark from the top of Corcovado and a breathtaking view as you leave the tunnel, the lake is largely used by local cariocas as a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors to Rio should take advantage of the wonderful water-side walk and 5 mile bike path or maybe the public tennis and volleyball courts, the baseball diamond and soccer grounds. At night, the many kiosks offer good food and live music—some are informal branches of great restaurants.

This beach is located right next to Ipanema at the far west end of the same stretch of sand. Some of Rio's most chic clubs, restaurants and boutiques lie on its nearby streets, which get very crowded during the summer months. Much trendier than Copacabana, this is the place to be seen. Don't forget the not too far hippy fair on the weekends in neighboring Ipanema. This is also a good starting point to see the Jardim Botânico and Jóquei Clube.
  • Posto 6 - Copacabana, fabio (guest) wrote 17 years ago:
Copacabana is a borough located in the southern zone of the city Rio de Janeiro, famous for its 4 km beach. The district was originally called Sacopenapã until the mid-18th century. It was renamed after the construction of a chapel holding a replica of the Virgin of Copacabana, the patron saint of Bolivia. It was incorporated into the city on July 6, 1892. Copacabana begins at Princesa Isabel Avenue and ends at Posto Seis (lifeguard watchtower Six) near the Forte de Copacabana (Fort Copacabana). Beyond Copacabana, there is the small Arpoador beach, followed by the famous borough of Ipanema. According to Riotur, the Tourism Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro, there are 63 hotels and 10 hostels in Copacabana
