Estácio de Sá, who had gathered help from the Portuguese colonists and local natives in São Vicente (a total of about 300 men) came into the Guanabara Bay and officially founded the village of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro in the Praia de Fora, between the hills of Pão-de- Açúcar and Cara de Cão. The Portuguese forces made up to plan how to expel the French troops that had occupied some of the land around what is today the center of Rio. The French named this stretch of land as Henryville. The final battle took place on January 20th, 1567. The French were defeated. There is a triangular pyramidal monument to Estácio de Sá, erected on the Aterro do Flamengo. One of its edges points out to Praia de Fora, where the village was first founded.
